DailyPearls 15/6/17: DEAR PEARLIGHTS,

Good day lights. I believe our day has been going well. I’m pretty excited today and with the joy in my heart, we are going to be talking about a popular scripture we all know or at least have heard about sometime in our lives. Being the LIGHT OF THE WORLD!!!!!!

Straight to scriptures

Matt 5:14

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.KJV

Jesus clearly calls us the light of the world here? Why are we called ‘the light’ and not just ‘a light’? It’s because, as long as this world is concerned there’s just one light, and one darkness that cannot comprehend it. God is that light.

1 John 1:5

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.KJV

Jesus also testified this of himself. Note that God is three in one, One in three; a Trinity. So when Jesus called himself the Light of the world, he was saying it as one of the Godheads in trinity.

John 8:12

12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.KJV

So, God is light. The light used in these instances is metaphorical for righteousness, goodness, holiness, everything good and pure. Darkness here is just the opposite of what light represents.

Now we are in God and God is in us. As believers, we have the nature of God in us, the nature of light. The Holy Spirit dwells in us and so we have the light of life that Jesus spoke about in the previous verse we just read. So what are we supposed to do with the knowledge of us being the light of the world?

Matt 5:16

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.KJV

We are supposed to let that light shine, such than men would see it and understand it through our doing of good works. We are to show them how it’s done, how we are meant to live. Note that, we are not doing good works to become the light of the world, we do it because we already are the light of the world. Besides it is God who works in us.

Phil 2:13

13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Therefore, the reason why we do good works in the first instance as believers is because God is the one working in us and through us for His good pleasure. Remember the fruits of the spirit?

Gal 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.KJV

These are the ‘works’ we are supposed to show off or ‘shine off’ as the case maybe. It is the Holy Spirit, Light in you that would enable you to do them. The works are the fruit of the spirit within you, they happen because you have the spirit of God in you and so express who you have in you.

Jesus is our perfect example and if you go through the details of the life of Jesus, you see that he showed off these works, he constantly lived, expressing the fruit of the spirit within Him, and we are to live by His example.

Back to this verse,

Matt 5:16

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.KJV

When we do good works, and men see, what happens? They Glorify God. They acknowledge, praise, magnify, and celebrate Him. We draw men to God, we bring more people to the knowledge of Christ in us. We bring glory to God through that.

Our good works didn’t and wouldn’t save us, believing in the finished works of Christ did that. But we do good works because we are saved already, we are already the light of the world, we shine as an evidence of who we are- Light.

Father help us to shine our light so bright in every aspect of our lives, and let it bring glory back to you and draw men unto you. Amen.
